Here are today's top election stories, and we'll start with Bill Clinton:
"Bill Clinton and 2 Democrats Spar Over Comment on Debate" (Patrick Healy, New York Times) While Hillary Clinton says the attacks on her at the last Democratic debate were based on her frontrunner status, others close to the campaign, like Geraldine Ferraro, have expressed things differently. Now there's husband Bill, whose comments yesterday about the pile-on invoked the Swift Boaters -- a comparison Barack Obama was, ahem, swift to criticize.
"Giuliani, Clinton Maintain Leads in Double Digits" (Susan Page, USA Today) A new USA Today/Gallup poll finds that the 2008 presidential race remains as it was -- with both Rudy Giuliani and Hillary Clinton holding sizeable leads. The news is what's happening lower down on the GOP ledger, where John McCain has inched into second place.
"U.S. Candidates Grapple With Pakistan Crisis" (Susan Davis, Wall Street Journal) All the candidates condemn what Pakistani President Pervez Musharrafis doing, but differ on whether it's the Bush administration's fault. Bonus points if you can guess which party's candidates think what.
"Thompson Campaign May Be Shifting Gears" (Michael Shear, Washington Post) If October showed Fred Thompson's speed in first gear, and November is his second gear, then by January he should have powered into fourth. And that's about as far as we'll take this metaphor.
"Obama: Clinton Flip-Flops On Energy" (Jason Clayworth, Des Moines Register) The ethanol outbidding in Iowa continues, with Obama attacking Clinton's energy plan as a reversal of her record, which he sees as insufficiently pro-ethanol.
"Edwards Pushes for Clarity on Iraq" (Philip Elliot, Associated Press) John Edwards kept up the heat on Clinton as well, this time going after the senator's Iraq record. A Clinton spokesperson responded that Edwards' campaign these days is all about "personal attacks."
"McCain Struggling to Win Over Voters" (Roddie Burris, The State) John McCain's polling numbers might be looking up, but his fundraising operation is still meager. On tthe trail in South Carolina, voters are responding but it won't mean much if they don't also open their wallets.
"Mike Huckabee: A Conservative With a Social Gospel" (Gail Russell Chaddock, Christian Science Monitor) A look at Mike Huckabee's social conservative message, and why he defends it against charges that he is not a "consistent conservative."
"Ron Paul's Money Draws Fresh Attention" (Jim Kuhnhenn, Associated Press) Part of the benefit of good fundraising is that it's a tangible sign of support the media can use to write about your campaign, and look to see Ron Paul get a good share of coverage over the next couple weeks.
