New CBS News poll on the '08 Republican race (Oct 12-16, 319 GOP LV):
Giuliani 29 (+2 vs. last poll in Sept)
Thompson 21 (-1)
McCain 18 (nc)
Romney 12 (-2)
Huckabee 4 (first time included in poll)
According to CBS News, the good news for Giuliani is that he is tied with Fred Thompson among self-described "conservatives" at 24%, he trails Thompson by only 3 points among white evangelicals (29 to 26), and he leads McCain among self-described moderates by a margin of 32 to 23.
However, the survey also suggests an increased level of doubt about Giuliani: only 30% of Republican primary voters in the current survey "strongly favor" Rudy, compared with 47% two months ago, while the number saying they have "reservations" about Giuliani has increased to 60% from 45% during the same period.
Overall, Giuliani leads by 9.3% in the RCP Average.
