Over at Politics Nation, Reid has the goods on the dust up between Virginia Senators John Warner and Jim Webb. The only thing I'll add is this: a pdf of the letter Secretary of Defense Robert Gates sent to Senator Warner last week outlining the case for not supporting the Webb Amendment. Gates closed his letter with this:

I believe that the intent of those who support this amendment is honorable and motivated by a desire to advance the welfare of our troops. Unfortunately, I also believe the amendment would in fact result in the opposite outcome while dangerously restricting our nation's ability to respond to an unpredictable and increasingly dangerous world.
