The Daily 2008

Before getting to reax from President Bush's speech last night, there's the matter of Rudy Giuliani vs. MoveOn.org.

As the New York Times itself reports today, Giuliani "sought -- and received -- space in Friday editions" blasting the MoveOn.org "Gen. Betray Us" ad. Neither the Times or the Giuliani campaign disclosed the price. (Katharine Seelye, NYT)

Here's the ad on Giuliani's Web site. Notice how Giuliani ties Hillary Clinton to the MoveOn.org ad.

Although the candidates all responded in some way to Bush's address last night, none paid more for a chance to rebut the president than John Edwards, who took out a two-minute commercial slot on MSNBC following the debate. (AP)

"That's what I hoped to hear." Mitt Romney is picking up what Petraeus and Bush are putting down. (Renee Lee, Houston Chronicle)

Talk to the Military Experts. Barack Obama defends his Iraq withdrawal plan against criticism that it doesn't bring home troops fast enough. (Jason Clayworth, Des Moines Register)

Ben Smith and Jonathan Martin have a rundown of the other candidates' reactions to the speech. (The Politico)

Second wind? Republican candidates, however, feel particularly bolstered in standing with the president. (Michael Luo and Marc Santora, New York Times)

No Surrender. Democrats vowed to continue the fight to end the fight. (Kathy Kiely, USA Today)

Response from GOP "moderates" in Congress was less enthusiastic than from GOP presidential candidates. (Jonathan Weisman and Paul Kane, Washington Post)

Big Mo': Still, those with less to lose (i.e. "political and defense strategists") see the president's comments and Petraeus' testimony as net positives for the Republican party going into the 2008 elections. (Donald Lambro, Washington Times)

No Comment. Campaigning in Florida yesterday, Fred Thompson spoke to a "cheering" crowd of 1,000 -- good signs for a campaign that sees Florida as "key." Thompson, however, has some "boning up to do on Florida issues" and when asked about the Terri Schiavo case, said he didn't know enough about the issue. (Adam Smith, St. Petersburg Times)

Runs in the Family. Fred Thompson has a brother. And guess what? He's an actor too. (Joe Mathews, Los Angeles Times)

Into the Black? John McCain's campaign, currently on the "No Surrender" tour, for the first time this year had cash on hand at the end of July and August. (Dan Nowicki, Arizona Republic)

On Fundraising Woes... More fundraising problems for Hillary Clinton. (John Emshwiller, Wall Street Journal) Meanwhile, Norman Hsu's bail was set at $5 million. (AP)

... and HillaryCare. Trailing rivals Barack Obama and Edwards in presenting a health-care plan, Clinton is "seeking to avoid a repeat of her first, failed bid to revamp the system." (Bloomberg) But she will be presenting her plan on Monday. (Boston Globe)
