Rudy Squeezes Hillary

This Moveon.org ad thing is not going away. If anything, it's taken on even greater political significance as Republican Presidential candidates put pressure on their Democratic counterparts to disavow and disassociate themselves from the ad.

Fred Thompson and Mitt Romney have made headlines on the issue over the past couple of days, but Rudy Giuliani has clearly gained the most traction with his withering assault against Hillary Clinton, saying she engaged in "character assassination" against General Petraeus when she used the phrase "willful suspension of disbelief" to describe the contents of his report in her remarks on the Armed Services Committee on Tuesday.

Giuliani used Clinton's quote atop an ad that ran in the New York Times today - at the same rate as the Moveon.org ad, which Giuliani demanded, by the way - and also lambasted Clinton for the phrase in interviews on Larry King and Hannity & Colmes last night:

Charlie Hurt
of the New York Post argues that this episode with the Moveon.org ad was Hillary's "Sister Souljah moment" if there ever was one, and she blew it:

But instead of standing up to extremists in her party, Hillary echoed the ad's accusation that Petraeus was "cooking the books."

Believing his testimony before Congress, she told him, requires a "willing suspension of disbelief."

Put more simply, she basically said he's lying.

Calling Petraeus truth-challenged may bring cheers from the far left, anti-war wing of her party.

But Clinton is sorely mistaken if she thinks her trashing of a four-star general will somehow absolve her of her vote in favor of this war in 2002.

Anyway, with national polls consistently showing her running 20 points ahead, why is she pandering to this fringe group of the Democratic Party?

She should instead be a front-runner and begin her long journey toward calming reservations about her among independents and even Republicans who are sick and tired of the GOP.

Calling a troop commander a liar isn't the way to do that.

Hurt is exactly right, which is why Rudy suddenly appears to be back in the role of US District Attorney. He's got Hillary on the stand, under cross examination, and he's going to keep squeezing her politically as long and hard as he can.
