Arizona Republican Congressman Rick Renzi is retiring. That makes five retirements so far (Hastert, LaHood, Pickering & Pryce are the others), and puts another Republican district into play.
NRCC Chairman Tom Cole released the following statement:
"Rick Renzi has been an effective representative for the people of Arizona's First Congressional District. He is a hard worker and a dedicated legislator. Rick Renzi is a champion on border security, forest management, Native American issues, rural healthcare and agriculture issues. He is a tireless advocate for the people of rural Arizona and continuously fights to make sure their needs are met. He has a determined spirit that will be missed by both the voters in his district and his colleagues here in the U.S. House.
"Arizona's First Congressional District is a Republican seat and we have every intention of keeping it that way. The Democrat majority has piled up a horrible record and the American people have taken notice. Any Democrat candidate will have to answer for the liberal agenda of Nancy Pelosi and the low approval ratings of the Democrat-led Congress. We are going to immediately start discussions with interested candidates and move forward aggressively in our efforts to retain this seat."
