New fundraising numbers out of Capitol Hill show more bad news for Republicans hoping to overcome their minority status and return to power. After seven months, FEC reports show the NRCC has raised $32 million and spent $31.5 million, leaving it $1.97 million cash on hand and a $4.1 million debt.
As Paul Kane figures, at least $10 million went to paying down the NRCC's original debt, of more than $14 million, but where did the other $20 million go?
The DCCC has fared much better, as one would expect with a new majority. Democrats have hauled in $40.5 million this year and $21.3 million in the bank, along with a $3.5 million debt.
Kane points out an FEC report showing Democratic House candidates outraising their GOP counterparts by a whopping $94.2 million to $63.6 million. That's a huge gap, especially when Republicans have historically outspent Democrats.
Numbers on the Senate side are better for the GOP, but not by much. Democratic candidates have so far outraised Republicans, $47.6 million to $33 million, and the DSCC holds a $20.6 million to $6.5 million cash on hand advantage over the NRSC. The DSCC retains a $4 million debt, while the NRSC has paid off its obligations from last year.
The RNC retains its historic advantage, with $16.1 million cash on hand to the DNC's $3.9 million.
Meanwhile, the NRCC is trying to raise money $16 at a time for 16 months to target 16 Democratic seats. Great idea, but there are only 15 months until election day. "We wish Tom Cole and the NRCC luck in their December 21st election efforts," DCCC spokeswoman Jennifer Crider told the Washington Post. Retorted NRCC talker Ken Spain: "We must have confused the number of months left until Election Day with the Democrats' approval rating." Ouch.
In an era of snowmen asking questions of presidential campaigns, is it a surprise that MySpace and MTV are going to host an online chat with candidates? Not in the least. What's the fallout if a candidate uses inappropriate AOL IM language? And should we even try to forecast the press the following day? Yes:
"OMG, I totally know what you mean," wrote Senator Clinton, responding to one questioner. "LOL," added former Governor Mitt Romney. "(Emoticon here)." Former Mayor Rudy Giuliani ruffled feathers with his response to a question about his position on abortion: "WT_? I've already answered that."
Speaking of Giuliani, rarely is a politician's child in the news for good reasons. So it's nice to see that young Andrew Giuliani shot par 71 yesterday at Meadow Brook, four strokes off the pace. As of 10:22 this morning, Giuliani was two under for the day through nine holes, tied for fourth place.
