In Memorium

In this week's New Yorker, Jeffrey Toobin takes a look at the as-yet-unsolved murder of a prominent civil servant. It's one of the few articles that touches a nerve with me.

A month after the September 11th attacks, on October 11, 2001, Assistant U.S. Attorney Tom Wales was sitting in his Seattle home when he was shot to death by a still-unknown assailant. Wales, a long-time public employee, was a man with causes. He went after many white-collar criminals and ran Washington CeaseFire, a prominent gun control organization in Washington State.

I went to high school with Wales' daughter; his nephew was one of my best friends growing up; and I worked for him during the summer. It's strange to think that, going on six years after his death, the murder of a government employee in his own home remains unsolved.
