New numbers from the Post today, showing Senator Hillary Clinton solidifying her lead on the day of the first DNC debate:
Democrats
Clinton 39 (+4 from last poll, ending 6/1)
Obama 28 (+5)
Gore 14 (-3)
Edwards 9 (+1)
(w/o Gore)
Clinton 45 (+3)
Obama 30 (+3)
Edwards 12 (+1)
Every candidate gains ground from their position in the last poll. Who loses? "No opinion" and "none of these," suggesting the Democratic field is solidifying. Meanwhile, 83% of Democrats and those who lean toward the party say they are satisfied with the Democratic field. It may be that Mr. Gore's window is, if not firmly shut, then at least closing quickly.
Also of note, the Post asked those who support Clinton and Obama if they back their chosen candidates strongly, or somewhat. Clinton wins strong backing from 68% of her voters, while 56% of his voters strongly back Obama. Meanwhile, 43% of respondents say Clinton is best positioned to beat the Republican nominee in '08, compared with 27% for Obama. All three of these numbers are excellent for the Clinton campaign as they head into the first DNC-sanctioned debate. In previous debates, Clinton has performed very well.
More on the debate later. Several questions of the poll are held for future release, so look for a poll on the Republican side by tomorrow or Wednesday.
