CBS/NYT is out with a new survey on 2008 in which they continue to poll only the top three Democrats and top four Republicans. On the Democratic side, Clinton ticks down and John Edwards finally has at least one data point to give him some comfort:
Democrats
Clinton 43 (-5 vs. last poll June 26-28)
Obama 24 (nc)
Edwards 16 (+5)
Other 9 (+1)
Undecided 7 (+2)
For the Republicans, McCain's slide has left Thompson in a strong second place:
Republicans
Giuliani 33 (-1 vs. last poll June 26-28)
Thompson 25 (+3)
McCain 15 (-6)
Romney 8 (+2)
Other 11 (+4)
Undecided 5 (nc)
Other notables:
Democrats lead by 15 points in the generic ballot for president (47-32), but that's a significant decline from the last poll on June 26-28 showing the Dems with a 27-point lead (55-28).
Sixty-one percent of Democratic primary voters say they are satisfied with their choices for President, only 36% of Republican primary voters feel the same way. Six in ten Republicans wish they had more choices.
President Bush's job approval is at 29% (+2 vs last poll June 26-28); approval of his handling of foreign policy is 27% (+2); economy 37% (+1); Iraq 25% (+2); the campaign against terrorism 39% (nc).
Congress' job approval is also at 29%, up two points from the last poll June 26-28. In a further question, 58% say they are "mostly disappointed" with what the Democrats are doing in Congress, while 68% say the same for Republicans.
