A Brief Take on the Debate

Of the five presidential debates thus far, I don't think any candidate has emerged as much of a clear winner as Giuliani did last night. He gave solid answers on a number of questions and seemed very much in control throughout - even while he was incurring the wrath of the Almighty during his answer on abortion.

McCain had a good night as well, with a heartfelt response on the war and he mounted a vigorous defense of the immigration bill in the Senate.

In my view Romney finished a distant third, and while he didn't necessarily help himself I don't think he hurt himself either.

The rest of the field was more or less forgettable, with the exception of Mike Huckabee and his response to the question about evolution. Huckabee took what could have been a difficult question for some and turned it into an eloquent defense of his belief in God which I suspect resonated with a great number of Americans, regardless of their politics:

In the last debate, Huckabee made an impression with humor. This time he did it with oratory. Though Huckabee may not be getting traction in the polls as a contender for the nomination, he's certainly distinguishing himself as a possible running mate, especially if the eventual nominee is a pro-choice former Mayor of New York City.
