The Pew Research Center touts the results of its recently completed survey on Muslims in the U.S. with the following lead graf:
The first-ever, nationwide, random sample survey of Muslim Americans finds them to be largely assimilated, happy with their lives, and moderate with respect to many of the issues that have divided Muslims and Westerners around the world.
The Detroit Free Press, on the other hand, begins its report by highlighting two of the most disturbing findings in the report:
Twenty-six percent of young Muslims living in the United States say suicide bombings in the defense of Islam can be justified, according to a major study of American Muslims released today. And only 40% of all Muslims say they believe Arabs were behind the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
Other findings from the survey include:
"Only 5 percent of U.S. Muslims expressed favorable views of the terrorist group al Qaeda, though about a fourth did not express an opinion."
"Six in 10 said they are concerned about a rise in Islamic extremism in the United States, while three in four expressed similar worries about extremism around the world."
"By six to one, they say the United States was wrong to invade Iraq, while a third say the same about Afghanistan - far deeper than the opposition expressed by the general U.S. public."
The report also found that Muslims living in America were usually better off financially than their Muslim counterparts in Europe. American Muslims "express nearly as much happiness with their lives and communities as the general public does, show a broad willingness to adopt American customs, and have income and education levels similar to others in the United States." The survey has a margin of error of 5 percent.
