Painting a Picture

Molly Ball of the Las Vegas Review-Journal provides us with this arresting description of Bill Richardson at a backyard barbecue on a recent visit to Nevada:

In an interview, Richardson held a hot dog with one beefy hand and ate while he talked, flecks of bun spewing forth as he spoke.

The mark of a good writer is the ability to convey detail in such a way that readers feel as if they're right in the middle of the story. Ball has not only done that, in 25 words she's painted a picture of Bill Richardson that leaves a lasting impression - albeit an unfavorable one.
