Republican Sen. Charles Grassley of Iowa voted with Democrats Thursday to authorize subpoenas for Bush administration adviser Karl Rove and other White House aides.

The vote came during a meeting of the Senate Judiciary Committee, of which Grassley is a senior member. Senators voted vocally rather than through polling, but Grassley made it clear he was in favor of the authorization.

"I want the record to show that I voted 'aye,' " Grassley told Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy, D-Vt.
