Two Views on Iraq

In an interview from Baghdad, Senator John Sununu told the New Hampshire Union-Leader, "I think the goal of withdrawing (all American) combat troops by the end of 2008 is very realistic and attainable."

Also, Senator Bob Corker discusses his recent trip to Iraq with the Memphis Commercial-Appeal editorial board. Here's part of what Corker said:

There's been mistakes made. Years and years of lots of mistakes made. . . . I truly believe with all my heart that we need to give General Petraeus until this summer to see if what he's doing will work. . . . I believe what we need to do is do what we can working with the Iraqi military to create a sense of security there so that people can work through this political process together. While we're seeing early signs of good things happening, I know there's going to be some setbacks, but I think we'll know by midsummer whether what General Petraeus is doing on the ground is working or not. And I absolutely believe that he will tell us. He will tell us not only in the Senate but the American people whether he believes that what he's doing is not working. . . . We're going to have another bite at the apple in this upcoming year. The fiscal year ends on Sept. 30, and there's a supplemental (appropriation) coming out to take us for a ways right now. I think what we should do is give him a chance. . . .

Finally, as the war in Iraq enters its fifth year, Karen DeYoung takes a look at some of the statistics on the war in today's Washington Post.
