This item from the Washington Times reporting that Ben Cardin pulled out of an NAACP-sponsored debate tonight doesn't leave a very good impression - especially coming as it does on the heels of the thumping he took from Michael Steele and Kevin Zeese in a debate yesterday.

The report may or may not be accurate in the particulars - Cardin's camp says he never confirmed attending the event and that he'll be debating Steele at the statewide NAACP conference on Saturday - but as a political matter it certainly does give off the smell of fear and it also provides Michael Steele another opportunity to make in-roads with African-American voters. That's the last thing Cardin needs as the race heads into the home stretch.
